Riverford Organic Farmers had only one thing in mind for their new EV van fleet. Learn what that was.
Riverford are one of the United Kingdom’s largest organic food retailers and supplies consumers with boxes of high-quality produce right to their doors. Covering over 85,000 households every single week, the job is very rewarding but at the same time, a huge responsibility for Riverford.
Riverford realized early on that their customers were placing more and more value on corporate accountability and environmental sustainability – they were purchasing organic produce after all.
Riverford established a set of ambitious sustainability goals and agreed that a great first step would be to transition their delivery fleet to all electric. A daunting task but one which promised the potential of a huge ROI and worked to impress and reassure their thousands of customers that Riverford was an environmentally responsible company to depend on.
But this initial goal was not without inherent challenges. Some of the more obvious obstacles were:
· A reduced payload, meaning they couldn't carry as much produce per van
· No drilling into the floor of the vehicle due to the battery underneath
· They needed a sustainable lining solution, not plywood
A new problem rears its head
Although these concerns were notable, a new and much more serious issue became clear.
Riverford was delivering fresh produce but their traditional plywood floors were not hygienic. This presented an alarming development; these floors could not be wiped down effectively which exposed the risk of produce contamination.
The company was introduced to LEGEND Fleet Solutions, a Canadian manufacturer of safe, durable and sustainable cargo van interior linings, floors and accessories and saw they offered a solution to all of these challenges.
A consultation was arranged between LEGEND and Riverford to further determine what products would best suit their fleet requirements. LEGEND produced a full custom prototype vehicle for Riverford which cemented their decision to use LEGEND to upfit their fleet.
Riverford discovers the all-inclusive solution
Through this partnership, Riverford achieved these tremendous benefits:
An easy-to-clean recycled composite lining to the cargo space that is water and chemical resistant, creating a 100% hygienic work and cargo area in their vehicles.
With the incredible light weight of the lining and floors, Riverford saved over 75KG of weight on the vehicle, which meant that they could increase their delivered revenue by £1.25m per annum with the same number of vehicles!
If this weight saving was not used up with extra produce, it would increase their range efficiency, enough to go 1.3 times around the world per year!
LEGEND’s "no-drill" flooring system ensured there were no damages to the battery pack.
LEGEND’s products are made out of up to 75% recycled materials, and can be recycled at end of life, creating a huge impact on meeting Riverford’s sustainability goals.
Riverford and their crews are truly Legends Of The Road.
